Sales Strategy
Feb 1, 2017 | Canadian Professional Sales Association lock

It’s important that you’re always working to accelerate your career, especially in an industry like sales, where staying up to date with the latest trends can help your career grow exponentially. While some people feel stumped when considering how to accelerate their career in sales, there are easy, practical ways that you can boost your career. With determination and the willingness to put in hard work, anyone is capable of climbing the ladder and making great career progress. If you’re looking to accelerate your sales career, here are some ways you can go about it.

Establish Goals

Definitions of success are different for different people. Some sales reps might consider getting promoted as accelerating their career, while others might consider it perfecting their set of skills and performing better as a result. It’s important that you clearly define what you want out of your sales career and what both your short-term and long-term goals are. Goal setting is a critical component of success; without clearly defined goals, you don’t have to work towards anything to properly measure your success. Once you’ve clearly defined your goals, you’ll find yourself working harder to achieve them and accelerating your sales career in unexpected ways.

Take Initiative

Being able to follow directions and carry out assigned work successfully is important, but this doesn’t mean you should just wait around for instruction. Taking initiative is crucial if you want to accelerate your sales career. This means finding creative ways to approach sales calls, setting goals for yourself that exceed the minimum company requirements, and problem solving on your own. The ability to take initiative demonstrates an aptitude for sales and an ability to work independently—qualities that are indicative of a high-achiever. When you begin taking initiative, those around you will take note.

Work on Time Management

Time management is so important in this industry. How you use your time and how efficiently you carry out sales calls is entirely up to you. If you’re truly serious about accelerating your sales career, then you’ll take time management seriously and plan out how you spend your day.

One of the biggest threats to sales success is wasted time around the office. It can be easy to fall in the trap of wasting time, whether it’s through small tasks that eat away at your central work, or distractions that keep you from getting the important things done. A great salesperson knows how to manage their time and make the most out of their day.

Gain Competitive Edge

One of the best ways to accelerate your career is to demonstrate the degree to which your skills retain a competitive edge within the industry. This means keeping up to date on the latest strategies, technologies, and skills necessary to make it in sales. Sales strategies are constantly fluctuating; strategies that were formerly in wide use have slowly been phased out in favour of new effective strategies that confront changes in how we communicate. Staying ahead of the curve is one of the best ways to ensure that your sales career is on an upward trajectory.

Consider Sales Training

An easy way to gain competitive edge in the workplace is by undergoing sales training. Sales training provides you with the latest information and the latest strategies necessary to succeed, while also ensuring that the skills every sales rep needs are up to snuff. Sales training is often misunderstood as something that’s only necessary for new hires, when in fact, the benefits of ongoing training for employees of all experience levels has long been touted.
